Gli apparati effimeri per le esequie di Filippo IV. Ricostruzione digitale e VR

The study being proposed concerns the theme of ephemeral structures set up for solemn occasions held within the Cathedral of Palermo, chosen as the city's most representative sacred place. On these occasions, the interior space of the Cathedral was enriched with temporary constructions that often served to celebrate royal funerals and, at the same time, new coronations. In particular, attention has been focused on the funerary mausoleum designed in 1665 by Paolo Amato for the effigy funeral of Philip IV of Spain. Using the tools of graphic and geometric analysis and digital modeling, the aim is to reconstruct the artifact based on its engraving and description presented in Girolamo Matranga's 1666 volume Le solennità lugubri e liete. The ultimate goal is therefore the enjoyment of the 3D model in Virtual Reality, virtually relocating it within the Cathedral, in the configuration contemporary to the period under study, thus prior to the eighteenth-century interventions that reshaped its architectural appearance.
