Steriles... harenae(Luc. 9, 378). Per una morfologia del deserto libico nella Pharsalia

Rich as it is in thaumasia and terata, the desert landscape of Libya fully responds to the physiognomy of the ninth book of Lucan’s Pharsalia, imbued with paradoxographic literature. Flowing into this broad description are the legacies of a tradition between Herodotus and Sallust, Pomponius Mela and Curtius Rufus. The morphology of the Libyan dunes is domi nated by the presence of the Austro, which continually redraws its appearance and configu ration, giving the reader a measure of the precariousness of the site and the life conducted there. Catapulted into a hostile and changing space, the army led by Cato Uticense will have to contend with high temperatures, the absence of springs, and the multiplicity of reptiles that infest the territory: a place ‘au-delà des frontières’, ideal for testing the ethical stature of the individual soldier and measuring his conduct in the face of the arduous trials to be endured. Against this backdrop, Cato himself claims for himself an ‘overexposure’ to the dangers with which the entire contingent will have to grapple, as proof of the full faith in the magnum virtutis opus (9, 381) and durum iter ad leges (v. 385) advocated during the preliminary speech to the enterprise

Ricco com’è di thaumasia e di terata, il paesaggio desertico della Libia risponde appieno alla fisionomia del nono libro della Pharsalia di Lucano, imbevuta di letteratura paradosso grafica. Confluiscono in quest’ampia descrizione i lasciti di una tradizione compresa fra Ero doto e Sallustio, Pomponio Mela e Curzio Rufo. La morfologia delle dune libiche è dominata dalla presenza dell’Austro che ne ridisegna continuamente l’aspetto e la configurazione, dando al lettore la misura della precarietà del sito e della vita che lì si conduce. Catapultata in uno spazio ostile e mutevole, l’armata capitanata da Catone Uticense dovrà misurarsi con tempe rature elevate, con l’assenza di sorgive, con la molteplicità dei rettili che infestano il territorio: un luogo ‘au-delà des frontières’, ideale per saggiare la statura etica del singolo soldato e misu rarne la condotta dinanzi alle ardue prove da sostenere. In questo scenario Catone stesso ri vendica per sé una ‘sovraesposizione’ ai pericoli con cui l’intero contingente dovrà cimentarsi, a riprova della fede piena nel magnum virtutis opus (9, 381) e nel durum iter ad leges (v. 385) pro pugnati durante il discorso preliminare all’impresa
