Donne e Sante: vestiti, orli e gioielli nella statuaria lignea femminile del Cinquecento nella Sicilia Occidentale

The contribution examines the decoration of some wooden statues of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries of Western Sicily which, like those of the other part of the island, offer, despite the fact that few examples have come down to us with respect to those mentioned in the documents, a significant sampling on the richness of clothes. The decoration of the simulacrums, almost always entrusted to gold and a few symbolic colors, according to the estofados technique, sometimes reflects the taste of the time. In fact, the essay examines female statues, mostly Madonnas and Saints venerated on the island, which, having escaped the neglect of time or the drastic repainting of past and even recent centuries, show very fine decorations. These, entrusted to well-known painters and/or gilders, who took over the completed work if not also at the beginning by providing the preparatory drawing of the work itself, emerged following scientific restorations

Il contributo esamina la decorazione di alcune statue lignee del Cinquecento e del Seicento della Sicilia Occidentale che, al pari di quelle dell'altra parte dell'Isola, offrono, malgrado ci siano giunti pochi esempi rispetto a quelli citati nei documenti, una significativa campionatura sulla ricchezza delle vesti. La decorazione dei simulacri, quasi sempre affidata all'oro e a pochi e simbolici colori, secondo la tecnica dell'estofados, riflette talvolta il gusto dell'epoca. Nel saggio, infatti, si esaminano statue femminili, perlopiù Madonne e Sante venerate nell'Isola, che, scampate all'incuria del tempo o alle drastiche ridipinture dei secoli passati e anche recenti, mostrano finissime decorazioni.
