The essay identifies three factors that aggravate the ecological crisis: geopolitical competition, self-representational consumerism, and a third, almost entirely overlooked, which the author calls the techno-anthropological circle. Against the recurrent discredit of technology, the argument holds that the human being is constitutively technical: lacking natural specialisation, it compensates through technical supplements, and it is from the prolonged hybridisation of animal soul and technical apparatus that spirit, consciousness and reason emerge. Technology is therefore not an accident that befalls humanity but the condition of its second nature, which is why the ecological question cannot be settled by renouncing it. The argument closes on the paradox of plastic, where the very qualities that make an artefact desirable are those that make it indestructible, and on the responsibility this places on design.
