This study examines the experiences and perceptions developed by supply chain managers regarding the adoption of an innovative technology embedded in firms’ strategic supplier-selection processes. More specifically, the inquiry addresses a research domain that has thus far received limited scholarly attention despite its growing and critical importance: the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a preventive safeguard designed to mitigate the risk of establishing commercial relationships with firms infiltrated by organized crime. The research design will comprise an exploratory multiple-case study conducted through focus groups involving members of the organizational units responsible for supply chain security. The resulting evidence will be examined through reflexive thematic analysis supported by NVivo 15 software. The anticipated findings are intended to provide novel insights into how the reconfiguration of screening processes may enhance the decision-making routines governing supplier selection and monitoring. The procedural innovation under investigation is expected to strengthen substantially the robustness of relationships established with commercial partners, while simultaneously requiring a clear delineation of the boundary between human and machine agency in decision-making. As a preparatory step toward the field investigation, an in-depth interview with the architect of the technological solution under examination made it possible to reconstruct its genesis and underlying design telos. The evidence obtained reveals the founder’s intention to develop a value proposition for legitimate firms oriented toward the establishment of a values-based network committed to legality. Such a network is conceived as a means of preserving the operational continuity, reputational integrity, and systemic reliability of virtuous firms, while preventing the emergence of pathological ties with entities involved in illicit activities. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the contribution represents the first process-oriented investigation to examine jointly the opportunities and threats associated with the use of AI in preventing interactions with criminal counterparties. Against this backdrop, the study offers both theoretical contributions and practical recommendations for firms, professionals, and policymakers.
Il presente studio si propone di analizzare le esperienze e le percezioni maturate dai supply chain manager in merito all’adozione di una recente innovazione tecnologica integrata nei processi aziendali di selezione strategica dei fornitori. In particolare, l’indagine prende in esame un ambito di ricerca finora marginalmente esplorato, ma di crescente e cruciale rilevanza: l’impiego dell’Intelligenza Artificiale (IA) quale presidio preventivo finalizzato alla mitigazione del rischio di instaurare relazioni commerciali con imprese infiltrate dalla criminalità organizzata. Il disegno di ricerca si articolerà in uno studio esplorativo di casi multipli, sviluppato mediante focus group con componenti delle unità organizzative deputate alla supply chain security, i cui esiti saranno analizzati attraverso un processo di analisi tematica riflessiva con il supporto del software NVivo 15. I risultati attesi ambiscono a offrire prospettive inedite su come la riconfigurazione dei processi di screening possa ottimizzare le routine decisionali afferenti alla selezione e al monitoraggio dei fornitori. L'innovazione procedurale oggetto di indagine dovrebbe infatti determinare un significativo rafforzamento della solidità delle relazioni instaurate con i partner commerciali, richiedendo simultaneamente una nitida delineazione dei confini tra uomo e macchina in sede decisionale. In ottica propedeutica all’indagine sul campo, l’intervista in profondità all’ideatore della soluzione tecnologica in esame ha permesso di decodificarne la genesi e il relativo telos progettuale. Le evidenze emerse testimoniano la volontà del fondatore di strutturare una proposta di valore destinata alle imprese legittime e orientata alla costituzione di un network valoriale di legalità, atto a preservare la continuità operativa, l’integrità reputazionale e l’affidabilità sistemica delle imprese virtuose, prevenendo al contempo l’insorgenza di legami patologici con entità coinvolte in attività illecite. Il valore del contributo risiede nell'essere, per quanto a conoscenza degli autori, la prima indagine di natura processuale volta a coniugare opportunità e minacce dell’utilizzo dell’IA nell’ambito della prevenzione di interazioni con controparti criminali. In tale contesto, lo studio propone sia contributi teorici che raccomandazioni pratiche indirizzate a imprese, professionisti e policymaker.
