The images of the dead carved on steles and other Roman grave markers show themselves, sometimes, with hands arranged in particular gestures, among which we can recognize some probable forms of charm towards the inevitability of death. Although they are sporadic cases and their meaning is perhaps not always univocal, the funerary sculpture of the Roman Cisalpine offers some remarkable testimonies of this phenomenon, known in provincial ambit as well.

Abstract
The images of the dead carved on steles and other Roman grave markers show themselves, sometimes, with hands arranged in particular gestures, among which we can recognize some probable forms of charm towards the inevitability of death. Although they are sporadic cases and their meaning is perhaps not always univocal, the funerary sculpture of the Roman Cisalpine offers some remarkable testimonies of this phenomenon, known in provincial ambit as well.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
