With increasing frequency, today, research in Architecture produces Atlases. No more a series of cartographies assembled in one volume, the Atlas has modified its genre over the centuries through some fundamental epistemological turns (Didi-Huberman, G., 2007, 2011, 2012). So, the Atlas is an implementable collection of images designed to be a matter of thought, able to posit a complex phenomenon concerning the forms of built spaces and that allows an epistemological leaps by which we can define some ways of transforming those same elements of which the phenomenon in case is made of. The Operative Atlas stands as a visual form of knowledge suitable for surveying, mapping, cross-mapping, mismapping, acting (Harley, J.B., 2009). It particularly suits to those complex systems where it is often needed to identify a posteriori homogeneous reading criteria, able to unveil some potentials architectural characters gathering myriad of elements, often indifferent to each other at the beginning (Corboz, A., 1982, 2001). Method: The Atlas, in architecture is therefore always operational. Its boards are both meta-projectual and graphic-cognitive. At the same time, they legitimize the epistemological value of the lacuna, as they are embedded in a larger visual culture which is sensitive to paratactic systems, collage, and the poetics of the fragment (Deleuze-Guattari, 1980). With reference to an ongoing PRIN 2022 PNRR research, which identifies the Operational Atlas as the main design tool to transform a system of more than 2000 cases, the contribution intends to discuss the heuristic role of this reference tool for the visual construction of architectural forms of knowledge. Conclusion/Discussion: The convergence of concreteness and abstraction that, in the Operational Atlas, allows the production of graphic and visual forms of knowledge that cannot be achieved otherwise, will be discussed through a reflection that roots its founding approaches in Durand (1802-1805), Warburg (1929), Galton (1880), Corboz. In counterpoint to some seminal theoretical elements stated by Gregotti (1966), Tafuri (1968), Moneo (1981), Arìs (1993), they will lead to argue the role of the operational Atlas in updating the graphic interpretative systems of Architecture, with respect to contemporary issues that always change and update the discipline.

L’Atlante, in architettura, è pertanto sempre “operativo”.
