Since the end of the 19th century, the principles of Italian Restoration have influenced interventions even outside Europe. In Egypt, and particularly in Cairo, the Palermo architect Achille Patricolo, son of the more famous Giuseppe, worked from 1914 onwards on the protection and restoration of medieval religious monuments. The paper compares restoration practices in Italy and Palermo between the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the technical and cultural adaptations implemented in Egypt.
