In John Locke’s liberal system, it is necessary to highlight the moral and juridical nature of the concepts of “toleration” (relating to the indulgence granted to the citizen) and “tolerance” (relating to freedom of thought and religious belief). The notion of “tolerance”, in the context of contemporary culture, concerns the right of the citizen (and of the magistrate) to freedom of expression. In this sense, the reference texts of the English philosopher are above all Two Treatises of Government, Essay Concerning Toleration and the four letters on toleration. Toleration derives from the Latin tolerantia and also concerns the freedom of expression which judges must also be able to enjoy.
