I will focus on one of Bruno Latour's first books on scientific discourse, published in 1984. For convenience, the following essay is divided into two parts: in the first, starting from Microbes, I will reconstruct Latour's perspective on scientific fact as an intrinsically social construct; in the second, I will focus on the more textual, communicative dimension of scientific discourse, drawing on the studies of Greimas and Fabbri on scientific text. The two things, as we shall see, are by no means separate, because one of the disciplines that has most influenced Latour since the beginning of his research is precisely Greimasian semiotics.
