The study focuses on the complex and widespread hypogean constructions of the so-called ‘under groung heritage,’ with particular attention to the qanāts, hydraulic systems built over the centuries under the ground of Palermo, which represent a fascinating testimony to the culture of water in the ancient city. Through a historical and technical analysis, supported by the development of advanced systems of measurement, representation and three-dimensional visualization, the results of a project aimed at understanding and securing the ‘Corso Gesuitico alto’ are illustrated. This is a complex network of underground tunnels for the capture and transport of water, the existence of which has been attested at least since the 14th century, for the enhancement of which the study presented also aims to make them ‘accessible’ to the public through virtual fruition. A methodological and proce dural workflow for data acquisition and analysis is proposed, accompanied by 3D virtual navigation of the examined hypogeal environments. During the integrated survey phase, the SLAM technique with WMLS device was used among the innovative technologies. In addition, a virtual reality platform based on the UnReal engine allows users to immersively explore the man-made cavities, enriching the experience with interactive infographics that enhance understanding during the virtual visit.
