This paper explores in detail the characteristics and applications of HVDC technology, from the viewpoint of protection systems and measurement solutions necessary to ensure their safe and reliable operation. More specifically, the main existing technologies, architectures and measurement devices are examined, potential causes of failure are discussed and possible solutions for mitigating these phenomena are highlighted. The analysis is based on a case-study analysis based on experimental data from real measurement systems installed in the field.

Abstract

This paper explores in detail the characteristics and applications of HVDC technology, from the viewpoint of protection systems and measurement solutions necessary to ensure their safe and reliable operation. More specifically, the main existing technologies, architectures and measurement devices are examined, potential causes of failure are discussed and possible solutions for mitigating these phenomena are highlighted. The analysis is based on a case-study analysis based on experimental data from real measurement systems installed in the field.
