The presentation derives from the two authors' experiences in teaching and researching urban planning/studies in two very different territorial and jurisdictional contexts; Europe and Australia. The paper will reflect on the relationship between planning education and planning practice in the two countries identifying the positive and negative roles of institutional and professional influences and interventions. In particular it will consider the extent to which the planning education systems in the two countries are equipping planners for the planning challenges that are unfolding in the 21st century.
