Blu e la traduzione visuale di una narrazione

In 2023, the artist Blu created a large-scale mural in Palermo as a means of visually narrating the social reality of an unauthorised and spontaneous local market in the Albergheria district of the city’s historic centre. His artistic intervention can be regarded as a form of visual èkphrasis, wherein urban art functions as a narrative medium to depict and interpret a complex social context, a collective place and the community of vendors to whom it lends a voice. The mural takes the form of an expansive, deconstructed storyboard, populated by figures and scenes whose interconnections are fully revealed in a stop-motion video later produced by Blu himself. This video represents the culmination of both the artistic intervention and its creative process. The animation constitutes a visual translation of an already visual narrative, offering a renewed understanding of the story by drawing attention to details through a guided viewing experience, an approach not immediately accessible when observing the mural directly. The transition from mural to video also signals an evolution in the reception of urban art. Through digital dissemination, the video has the capacity to reach a far broader audience than the original work, enabling the narrative to transcend the physical boundaries of the market and address a global public. This process not only amplifies the social message embedded in the artwork but also redefines its significance as a tool for denunciation and a catalyst for collective reflection.

Nel 2023 l’artista Blu ha realizzato a Palermo un grande murale per narrare visivamente la realtà sociale di un mercato locale non autorizzato e spontaneo, nel quartiere Albergheria del centro storico. La sua operazione artistica può considerarsi un esercizio di èkphrasis visiva, in cui l’arte urbana diventa strumento narrativo per descrivere e interpretare un contesto sociale complesso, un luogo collettivo e una comunità, quella dei venditori, alla quale restituisce la voce. Il murale è un grande spaginato storyboard nel quale sono rappresentate figure e scene il cui legame è disvelato da un video in stop motion, che lo stesso Blu ha realizzato successivamente all’opera e che è il culmine del suo intervento artistico e del suo processo creativo. L’animazione è la traduzione visuale di una narrazione anch’essa visuale e rivela una nuova conoscenza del racconto, soffermandosi sui dettagli, attraverso un percorso di lettura guidato, che non è immediato quando si osserva direttamente il murale. Il passaggio dal murale al video rappresenta anche un’evoluzione nella fruizione dell’arte urbana. Grazie alla condivisione digitale, il video può raggiungere un pubblico molto più vasto rispetto all’opera originale, permettendo di raccontare la sua storia a una platea globale, oltre i confini fisici del mercato. Questo processo non solo amplifica il messaggio sociale dell’opera, ma ne ridefinisce il valore come strumento di denuncia e testimonianza di riflessione collettiva.
