Vico Magistretti e l’architettura vernacolare: Casa Arosio a Pantelleria

How is it possible to describe an architecture that does not exist? Certainly, words can enable us to do this well, but perhaps using another kind of language, which uses graphic signs and thus images, could be far more effective. In this essay, an attempt will be made to virtually reconstruct a small house designed by Vico Magistretti in 1972 for the Arosio family in Pantelleria. According to a hermeneutic approach, the images, architectural diagrams and synoptic pictures produced, in addition to merely describing the architecture that was to be, attempt to investigate the design process within a reflection that is as holistic as possible. In a sort of reverse trajectory to the design path, in reconfiguring the architectural body of the house in three dimensions, an attempt will be made to interpret the genesis and meaning of the forms, intersecting purely graphic research with a series of in-depth studies: of a historical-biographical nature on the designer, on local places and building traditions, and finally on the influence exerted on Magistretti by his great master Ernesto Nathan Rogers.

In che modo è possibile descrivere un’architettura che non esiste? Certamente le parole possono consentirci di farlo in maniera accurata ma forse l’adozione di un altro tipo di linguaggio, che faccia ricorso al segno grafico e quindi alle immagini, potrebbe essere di gran lunga più efficace. In questo saggio si proverà a ricostruire virtualmente una piccola casa d’abitazione progettata da Vico Magistretti nel 1972 per la famiglia Arosio a Pantelleria. Secondo un approccio ermeneutico, le immagini, i grafici architettonici e i quadri sinottici prodotti, tentano di non fermarsi alla mera descrizione dell’architettura che doveva essere, ma si proverà un’investigazione del processo ideativo entro una riflessione il più possibile olistica. In una sorta di traiettoria inversa al percorso progettuale, nel riconfigurare in tre dimensioni il corpo architettonico della casa, si tenterà di interpretare la genesi e il significato delle forme, intersecando, alla ricerca prettamente grafica, una serie di approfondimenti: di natura storico-biografica sul progettista, su luoghi e tradizioni costruttive locali e in ultimo sull’influenza esercitata su Magistretti dal suo grande maestro Ernesto Nathan Rogers.
