In dialogue with some influential contemporary perspectives, in his rich path of thought Giorgio Palumbo shows how moral experience can be based neither on a simple natural evolution nor on our free decision. In our feeling responsible there is in fact a special initiative of good, which Palumbo explores through the category of “gratuity”, understood here as a gift that makes us feel free while it binds us and that binds us while it makes us feel free. Where does this gift come from? If it cannot be explained either in a naturalistic or contractual way, can a transcendent foundation be hypothesized? And even if we could, what degree of existential - and philosophical - certainty could we have?
