The main goal of this essay is to investigate the value which is attributed to the joy in the comedy Come le foglie by Giuseppe Giacosa (1900). It will also examine the mise-en-scène of the play that Luchino Visconti made in 1954 in attempt to analyze the ways in which the expressions of joy are represented on stage. Particularly, an analysis of prompt-book will bring out the director’s choices and the acting techniques which shape the joy on the stage, by depicting the social as well as the psychological aspects of each character.
