The paper focuses on the so-called “wars of city holiness” and the conflicts for episcopal primacy between Palermo and Messina in the first half of the seventeenth century. Royal historiographers, bishops and religious orders played a prominent role in these controversies, and the Roman Curia was also involved through the Congregation of the Index.
