La cultura dell’autonomia (Italia, sec. XIV)

The essay analyses the problem of freedom in the fourteenth century by means of some examples, almost always in the context of Italian communal cities. The analysis is carried out in three stages: a) to identify in the complex polysemy of political libertas the coexistence of two matrices: on the one hand volition, or the ability to act, attributed by Roman law to free individuals; on the other, the privilege that creates a space relatively free from interference, and which appears as a normal condition for the very possibility of acting for individuals and groups; b) to reveal freedom as one of the signs of legitimate power: the freedom - paradoxical for neo-republicans - of those who rule or those who govern; c) and finally to describe who, socially, are the subject(s) whose freedom is preached or who sometimes claim to use it: "What freedom are we talking about?

Il saggio analizza il problema della libertà nel XIV secolo, attraverso alcuni esempi, quasi sempre nell'ambito delle città comunali. L'analisi si svolge attraverso tre tappe: a) individuare nell'intricata polisemia della libertas politica la coesistenza di due matrici: da un lato la volizione, ovvero la capacità di agire, attribuita dal diritto romano agli individui liberi; dall'altro il privilegio che crea uno spazio relativamente libero da interferenze, e che appare come una condizione normale per la possibilità stessa di agire per individui e gruppi; b) rivelare la libertà come uno dei tratti che connotano il potere legittimo: la libertà - paradossale per i neorepubblicani - di chi domina o di chi governa; c) e infine declinare socialmente il soggetto o i soggetti di cui si predica la libertà o che talvolta ne rivendicano l'uso: “di quale libertà” stiamo parlando?
