During the Sars-Cov19 crisis lots of people did an historic reverse-migration from cities back to their native villages, searching a better place to live and work. In Sicily, in the Madonie district, one of the 72 pilot areas of the 2017 National Strategy for Inner Rural Areas in Italy, there are 21 municipalities that really have a potential, due to their historical background and natural landscape, needing however new technologies to emerge. Much changes can be done, trasforming these vil- lages into smart villages throught rehabilitation, for example, of old building estate, digital tech- nology, design for all and innovative materials, freely available and affordable to villagers today. These small urban centers, not so far from cities, preserve the cultural heritage of our country and these goals can contribute to obtain a better life and a best future, regaining ownership of these territories and revitalizing them. In 2021-2022, the PNRR, launched by italian MiC, has given oth- er possibilities to these municipalities and lots of these are going to participate to this program to have more chances for their development. New technological proposed strategies involve govern- ments, global businesses, corporations, startups, stakeholders, universities, academics under the dynamic operational capabilities and lastly citizens. Programs must integrate tradition, innovation and technology from academia to commercial viability of businesses, while operating with the support of governments, involving all the local, state and central levels; companies and institutions can achieve grater synergy and delivery when operating on open strategies which share knowledge and capabilities for the common good. The goal of this research is to explore innovative rehabil- itation and regeneration policies, models and interventions for these inner mountain area that can be scalable to more rural places with the same charateristics but also to connect them to the global ecosystem through smart rehabilitation combining memory, tradition and modernization.
