La cassa d’argento dei Santi Alfio, Cirino e Filadelfo a San Fratello (Me) e l’evoluzione dell’urna reliquiario in Sicilia dal Seicento al Settecento

Produced by the Palermo goldsmith shops of the mid-seventeenth century, it is the reliquary urn of Saints Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino kept in the Mother Church of San Fratello (Me). Performed in full Tridentine atmosphere, the work was commissioned by the establishment of the country constituted, specifically, by Baron Don Gaspare Lucchese and Filangeri Spatafora Larcan, the archpriest, the vicar and other emerging figures of the center, as governors, jurors, captains and notaries. The reliquary of the saints patricians, until now unknown to the island historiography, is an artifact of transition between the most sumptuous Sicilian baroque urns - istoriate and culminating with a micro figure of the Saint - performed on several levels and drawing by painters and architects, and those, more resized and the shape of a parallelepiped urn, characterized by a lively decorative pattern typically late baroque. We highlight, therefore, the characteristics of the most famous island urns made from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century of which the compositional-formal evolution is outlined.

Prodotto delle botteghe orafe palermitane della metà del Seicento, è l’urna reliquiario dei Santi Alfio, Filadelfo e Cirino custodita nella Chiesa Madre di San Fratello (Me). Eseguita in pieno clima tridentino, l’opera è stata commissionata dall’establishment del borgo costituito, nello specifico, dal barone don Gaspare Lucchese e Filangeri Spatafora Larcan, dall’arcipresbitero, dal vicario nonché da altre figure emergenti del centro messinese, come governatori, giurati, capitani e notai. Il reliquiario dei santi patrizi, finora ignoto alla storiografia isolana, per le sue caratteristiche, costituisce un manufatto di transizione tra le più sontuose urne barocche siciliane - istoriate e culminanti con una micro figura del Santo - eseguite su più livelli e con disegno di pittori e architetti, e quelle, più ridimensionate e dalla forma di urna parallelepipedo, contraddistinte da un brioso motivo decorativo tipicamente tardo barocco. Si evidenziano, quindi, le caratteristiche delle più note urne isolane eseguite dal Seicento al Settecento delle quali si delinea l’evoluzione compositivo-formale.
