The lack of specific documentation relating to the Ospedale Grande Santo Spirito in Palermo, and the presence of constituent chapters in 1442, had led to the assumption that the hospital was in operation only from the 1440s, disregarding the request of the provisional chapters of 1431 regarding the time required to restore, which was to be short, the building chosen to house the New Hospital, Palazzo Sclafani. A will dated December 1435 provides useful elements for the history of Palermo's charitable institution: it certifies that the Hospital was operating on that date; reveals the name, the first and only one known for the Medieval centuries, of a sick person admitted to the New Hospital; leads to the assumption that in Palermo, as in other cities with important Hospital Institutions, there was a notary who was loyal to the Hospital.

Abstract
The lack of specific documentation relating to the Ospedale Grande Santo Spirito in Palermo, and the presence of constituent chapters in 1442, had led to the assumption that the hospital was in operation only from the 1440s, disregarding the request of the provisional chapters of 1431 regarding the time required to restore, which was to be short, the building chosen to house the New Hospital, Palazzo Sclafani. A will dated December 1435 provides useful elements for the history of Palermo's charitable institution: it certifies that the Hospital was operating on that date; reveals the name, the first and only one known for the Medieval centuries, of a sick person admitted to the New Hospital; leads to the assumption that in Palermo, as in other cities with important Hospital Institutions, there was a notary who was loyal to the Hospital.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
