The essay provides a critical overview of the works of the writer Michele Prisco (1920-2003), for the first time studied considering its meta-narrative features. Through a close-reading that takes into account both Prisco’s novels and his theoretical production (that is, his contributions to the journal «Le ragioni narrative» and his forewords to books written by others), my aim is to point out how Prisco anticipated some crucial issues of contemporary Italian meta-novels, especially those lingering on the threshold between empirical reality and fiction (Siti, Starnone, Tarabbia)
