The study is configured as an investigation into the historical, political, cultural and religious intricacies of India before and after independence. These aspects constitute the beating heart and soul of Midnight's Children, the most celebrated work of Salman Rushdie's narrative corpus and one of the milestones of the contemporary literary scene. The Indian writer's text takes on the appearance of a modern epic, at times comical, of a magmatic and karst text for those who appear foreign to the dynamics and atmospheres of a boundless and multicultural country like India itself. We are faced with a novel which, in its complex structure, escapes any type of aesthetic and genre categorisation, appealing to any stylistic-rhetorical resource, in order to pursue its true objective: the search for identity among the fragmentation of existing. In order to be able to demonstrate the achievement of this uniqueness, i.e. of a specifically Indian Self, the analysis conducted exploits a series of theoretical/practical outposts, five to be exact, preparatory to this need: postcolonialism, magical realism, religious uncertainty, hybridism and fetishism.
