Abstract
In Sicily, the Easter rites present, from place to place, different characteristics (cult moments, performative actions, ritual symbolism, etc.) which reveal, with greater or lesser evidence, specific historical-cultural and peculiar backgrounds religious traditions: in some cases, especially in rural centres, certain sections of the rites seem more evidently supported by a vision of the world and by demands specific to agro-pastoral cultures and display symbolisms (vegetable fronds, food orgias, bonfires and torch processions, masquerades, races and dances of fercoli and giant puppets representing the apostles, etc.) which, recalling the need to promote the "renovatio temporis". In other cases, particularly in larger cities and towns, we observe moments that perpetuate or take up medieval and baroque traditions widespread and supported by monarchical regimes and certain religious orders, such as the solemn and composed processions of brotherhoods and workers that accompany large groups with groups of statues representing scenes of the Passion, generally called "mysteries", i.e. the staging, processional or on stage, of episodes highlights of sacred history with the intervention of actors and numerous figures. It is difficult to trace a unitary and linear historical profile of the sacred representations of the passion and death of Christ in Sicily. Over time, on the island as elsewhere in Italy, they have taken on multiple and locally changing forms, on the one hand because they are heirs of various previous typologies of dramatization of the Christological story (not exclusively of cult origin nor of religious origin), on the other because called to satisfy, according to a necessarily compromising process, the requests made from time to time by religious orders, confraternities, professional associations, political and ecclesiastical powers, and the "people" of the faithful.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
