Asphalt mixtures used in road pavements are complex systems formed by aggregates and bituminous binders. These systems are used to guarantee both stiffness and flexibility to the pavement structure. Due to the increase of traffic on roads, asphalt technologists started modifying the commonly used bitumen with addition of polymers that could enhance its properties. For different reasons but with similar requirements, the roofing industry started using modified bitumen to widen the temperature range of application of membranes. The vast majority of materials available consist of a reinforcement base of glass or polyester coated with oxidized or modified bitumen. The most commonly used modifiers are synthetic polymers such as SBS (styrene butadiene styrene) and APP (Atactic PolyPropylene). Bearing in mind the need to look for a substitute with higher availability and economic prices, the use of various types of recycled tyre rubber products is presented.
