If we examine the history of European thought in the 20th century, the year of the break between idealism and anti-idealism is represented by 1903, when Bertrand Russell published “The Principles of Mathematics”, giving way to neo-positivism, which on the European continent would develop as logical empiricism with representatives from the Vienna Circle, the Berlin Circle and the Lvov-Warsaw School. In the same year 1903 George Edward Moore, in the journal “Mind”, published the essay “The Refutation of Idealism.” But there is more, seeing that in 1903 he also published the volume “Principia Ethica”. Due attention should be paid to Moore, no less than to Russell, for the development of themes and problems that refer in a personal and original way to philosophy in the context of anti-idealism cultivated at Trinity College, Cambridge. The terms of reference of Moore’s production are therefore the philosophy of common sense and moral philosophy, worked out in a polemic with the dialectical philosophy of idealism and neo-idealism. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Trinity College in Cambridge became the privileged place of anti-idealism, which Moore cultivated with the contribution of his colleague and friend Russell, but also of his pupil and friend Wittgenstein.

Se prendiamo in esame la storia del pensiero europeo del XX secolo, l’anno della frattura tra idealismo e anti-idealismo è rappresentato dal 1903, quando Bertrand Russell pubblica “The Principles of Mathematics”, dando corso al neo-positivismo, che nel continente europeo si sarebbe sviluppato come empirismo logico con i rappresentanti del Circolo di Vienna, del Circolo di Berlino della Scuola di Leopoli-Varsavia. Nello stesso anno 1903 George Edward Moore, nella rivista “Mind”, pubblica il saggio “The Refutation of Idealism”; ma non solo, perché ancora nel 1903 dà alle stampe il volume “Principia Ethica”. A Moore, non meno che a Russell, va prestata la dovuta attenzione per l’elaborazione di temi e problemi che si richiamano in modo personale e originale alla filosofia nell’ambito dell’anti-idealismo coltivato al Trinity College di Cambridge. I termini di riferimento della produzione di Moore sono quindi la filosofia del senso comune e la filosofia morale, elaborate in polemica con la filosofia dialettica dell’idealismo e del neo-idealismo. Ad inizio del Novecento, il Trinity College di Cambridge divenne il luogo privilegiato dell’anti-idealismo, che Moore coltivò con il contributo del collega e amico Russell, ma anche dell’allievo ed amico Wittgenstein.
