Il corpo delle regine

More recent medieval studies, in the wake of new questions aimed at investigating the queenly condition from different and original perspectives, have traced an increasingly multifaceted profile of queens. In this essay we aim to look at the most external, material, and at the same time most intimate dimension, the body, which has its own history and is part of history, constituting it like social and economic structures and mental representations. The body of a queen associates a real, physical body, made up of beauty, fertility, care and health maintenance practices, sterility and illness, with an imaginary body fixed at the moment of death in the gisant which passes on its memory, transforms it into an icon and sometimes into myth. The essay traces the stories of some queens of Sicily, but not only, between the 12th and 15th centuries, whose bodies proved to be a tool for exerting influence, including political influence.

La medievistica più recente, sulla scia di nuove questioni volte a indagare la condizione reginale da prospettive diverse e originali, ha tracciato un profilo sempre più sfaccettato delle regine. In questo saggio ci proponiamo di guardare alla dimensione più esterna, materiale, e al contempo più intima, il corpo, che ha una sua storia e fa parte della storia, la costituisce non diversamente dalle strutture sociali, economiche, e dalle rappresentazioni mentali. Il corpo di una regina associa a un corpo reale, fisico, fatto di bellezza, fecondità, cure e pratiche di mantenimento della salute, di sterilità e malattia, un corpo immaginario fissato al momento della morte nel gisant che ne tramanda la memoria, la trasforma in icona e talora in mito. Il saggio ripercorre le storie di alcune regine di Sicilia, ma non solo, tra XII e XV secolo, il cui corpo si rivelò strumento per esercitare un’influenza anche politica.
