The article focuses the radical transformations associated with the affirmation of digital technologies in journalism. The pervasiveness of social media in the search for news in the daily on-life experience and the significance of data in newsmaking practices have opened up new possibilities for accessing and disseminating news, also giving space to a problematic mix of factual and totally (or partially) false or incorrect content, created with different levels of intentionality (disinformation, misinformation, malinformation). Although the use of fake news is not new, the contemporary success of disinformation strategies present peculiar and unprecedented characteristics that pose significant challenges both in terms of the journalistic profession and in terms of citizenship.
