Centri minori fra modelli nuovi o ritrovati. Le alte Madonie tra opportunità e suggestioni

«An architecture based on complexity and contradiction requires a special commitment to the whole: its real validity must be in its totality, or in its implications of totality», says Robert Venturi (Venturi, 2005, p.16). Is this suggestion still essential for all those who intend to closely address the role of the project in the realm of little towns? Sigfried Giedion, in his Space, Time and Architecture, stressed how buildings belong to city dweller. He wanted to «enjoy the view, the breezes and the sun, enjoy in complete calm that natural freedom that his work deprived him» (Giedion, 1953). After many years, our essay means to return to the specific three issues, strongly linked to each other, used by Giedion in the title of his book. The first concerns the value of Space to propose within scenarios and perspectives of the minor centers. The second topic concerns Time in its apparently changing structure in the existing buildings. It contrasts with the traces of a “non-linear dynamism” to attract young people (and not only) to the high Madonie. As for the third issue -what Giedion indicates as Architecture- we might ask: are we aware that we need to look at it as a whole, in their settlement logic and as an attractive value for the “new inhabitants”? These are three issues that in a multiscalar logic are able to encourage the systematic nature of the project and explicitly recall Gregotti’s “architecture as modification”.

Questo suggerimento è ancora essenziale per tutti coloro che intendono affrontare da vicino il ruolo del progetto nel territorio dei Centri minori? Sigfried Giedion, nel suo Space, Time and Architecture leggeva l’edificio per l’abitante della città. Aveva voglia di «godersi il panorama, le brezze ed il sole, godere in tutta calma quella naturale libertà di cui il suo lavoro lo privava» (Giedion, 1953, p. 505). A distanza di molti anni, il nostro articolo intende ritornare sulle specifiche tre questioni, fortemente collegate tra loro, poste da Giedion nel titolo della sua trattazione. La prima riguarda il valore di Spazio da proporre dentro scenari e prospettive dei Centri Minori. La seconda questione riguarda il Tempo nella sua struttura apparentemente mutevole dell’edificato esistente. In esso si contrappongono le tracce di un “dinamismo non lineare” per attirare giovani (e non solo) nelle alte Madonie. Nella terza questione, quella che Giedion indica come Architettura, noi siamo consapevoli che bisogna guardarla nell’insieme, nella loro logica insediativa e come valore attrattivo per gli “abitanti di ritorno”? Si tratta di tre questioni che in una logica multiscalare sono in grado di incentivare la sistematicità del progetto e richiamano esplicitamente la gregottiana “architettura come modificazione”.
