La rappresentazione dell'architettura in alcuni rivestimenti musivi di epoca medievale in Sicilia

Many buildings are depicted in the mosaic panels that enrich the churches built in Sicily in the XII century by the Norman kings. Such drawings display different views of the same building (plan, front, section) simply attached to each other, according to a common habit in the pre-renaissance drawing. Marble panels on the floor and on the lower end of the walls, as well as wooden decorations, display complex geometric patterns. This paper shows the first results of a research based on the assumption that geometric patterns could be used in the mosaic representation of buildings. The graphic analysis of a mosaic panel in the Palatine chapel of Palermo, depicting a pavilion covered by a dome, proposes a geometric pattern based on a square and an eight-pointed star.

Nei mosaici che decorano le chiese costruite in Sicilia nel XII dai re normanni compaiono rappresentazioni di edifici. Tali rappresentazioni, come frequentemente accade in epoca pre-rinascimentale, condensano, per accostamento, diverse ‘viste’ dello stesso edificio. La presenza negli edifici normanni di pavimenti e manufatti lignei decorati secondo pattern geometrici, ha suggerito la ricerca di analoghi tracciati nei rivestimenti musivi. L’analisi grafica propone la presenza di quadrati e ottagoni stellati in un mosaico della Cappella palatina di Palermo che raffigura un padiglione coperto da una cupola.
