The text starts from the consideration that in Sicily design has a certain matrix of the highest level; we refer to the ante litteram design that Ernesto Basile offers at the beginning of the 20th century collaborating with the factory Ducrot, which has also become a possible paradigm to restart, with the school of Anna Maria Fundarò, a Sicilian way of design that promotes forms of territorial development, of autonomy and cultural awareness with respect to the pervasive homologation of mass industrial production. Design is part of human history and develops not only in the specific specialist area, but in everyday practices and strategies; therefore it is difficult to draw clear differentiations between art, craftsmanship, design, especially in Sicily where high artistic craftsmanship has always welcomed aspects of popular culture, while a real solid industrial culture has never emerged. But certainly design stories have always been present, more or less isolated or undercurrent, in the stories of Sicilian material culture; from the dissemination through university teaching of the specific discipline aimed at training attentive and aware “daily designers”, up to entrepreneurial experiments aimed at introducing innovative dynamics in the various sectors and production contexts. In the text we try to build some elements of an “open” narrative, indicating the possible connections, to start the identification of one or more evolutionary lines of Sicilian design, recalling some emblematic “micro-stories” and other more recent and significant emergencies of the project of design.
