The vanishing infrastructure. The new ground of the Sagrera high speed railroad station English Abstract The ongoing railway station mega-project in Barcelona Sagrera shows the link between the construction of the new High Speed station and a vast linear park that will cover the existing railroad tracks. In the framework of one of the largest and most ambitious railway and urban redevelopment projects currently planned in all of Europe, this article focuses on the subordination of the Station to the park, that besides being a mere physical location issue (the station is literally under the park) can be reframed in a theoretical debate concerning the role of architecture in these truly significant urban regeneration processes. The titanic size of the park illustrates its overwhelming transformative role. Moreover, it reveals the underlying city vision, that connects districts at surface level addressing the park as an urban shaper, cohesive element, while architecture disappears underneath this new ground level. Questioning about how can architecture still matters in contemporary big-picture planning, the article provides at first a report of the two adjacent planning processes, then arguing for a transfer of representation, symbolical, architectural values from the station towards the park. This achieves the integration between the park and the station at an iconic, imaginary level, rather than at the effective design one. On this terms, the vanishing of the station, that is frequently identified with the park, questions how can architecture fulfil the promises of such huge scale projects. Finally, this article assesses how, in the case of Sagrera, to disappear seems for architecture to be the proper answer in order to reconcile massive investment infrastructure with the new paradigm of sustainability.

L’enorme progetto appena completato a Barcellona per il nuovo polo ferroviario della stazione Sagrera si caratterizza soprattutto per il legame fra la nuova stazione dell’Alta Velocità (AVE) e il vasto parco lineare, progetto opera di West 8, che copre la lunga trincea un tempo determinata nel tessuto urbano dai binari preesistenti. Ricostruendo il quadro di uno dei più grandi e ambiziosi progetti di rigenerazione urbana legati all’infrastruttura ferroviaria oggi in Europa, questo articolo si concentra sulla subordinazione della stazione al parco. Non si tratta di una semplice condizione di posizione (la stazione è letteralmente sotto il parco), ma di una nuova e sempre più diffusa condizione per la persistenza urbana delle grandi infrastrutture e dei loro edifici. Riformulata all'interno di un dibattito teorico, tale condizione conduce a riflettere sul ruolo che l’architettura riveste in questi processi, i principali vettori contemporanei per condurre azioni trasformative degli spazi urbani. La dimensione titanica del parco è anche attributo simbolico del suo valore. Essa, inoltre, rivela la nuova visione dei ruoli attribuiti alle materie urbane, ricucendo in superficie le due porzioni di città un tempo interrotte dai binari, e saturando le aree limitrofe al nuovo parco con interventi di destinazione prevalentemente residenziale e a carattere speculativo, ma facendo scomparire sottoterra il soggetto che avrebbe potuto svolgere un ruolo architettonico determinante: l’edificio stazione.
