Abstract

The intervention of conservation and enhancement of coastal towers, which is the subject of this paper, is the result of a study that focuses on a methodology for building restoration based on a rigorous analysis of the historical artifact and at the same time a sustainable management policy of cultural and environmental resources. The coastal towers are significant emergencies of the territory, traces of valuable relief of the Sicilian defense culture to historical and environmental value. The towers still have an intrinsic meaning that is not only of historical evidence, but being privileged sites in the area, through which you can trigger a circuit of knowledge and the exploitation of the same. The towers are in fact characteristic elements of the environment and often make it recognizable: the Conche tower is an example of this, Pollina, situated on the coast in the province of Palermo, nowadays is symbol of the country that guards it. The aim of this study is to produce an updated manual of construction techniques on the fortifications in Sicily, which can be useful for scholars in the field of historical architecture, as well as technicians working in the field of conservation and sustainable exploitation of cultural and environmental resources.
