Ernesto Basile y la variable latina del modernismo italiano

Also called "villino Ida" in homage to his wife, Basile’s home-study, in spite of the discreet volume and formal calligraphic instrumentation of unspecific style standard, stood out from the surrounding buildings of elegant and yet conventional structure, built in a mature phase of the Belle Époque, in the blocks traced on either sides of the first section of via Libertà, the northern expansion of Palermo. In the Basile House Hellenistic-Roman evocations are combined with memories of popular local dwelling traditions of the small coastal towns and exotic Maghreb references: a studied mix of domestic informal tone suggestions, whose individual components, in the end no longer distinguishable, contribute to classification of a strictly no specific style space. Basile’s rational evocation of a ideal Mediterranean dwelling culture, free of adjectives, rather than his complex intellectual pursuit of figuration of sobriety as the new means of expression, would also have paid off with some works of his students. With the villino Basile, suddenly, the rising Italian modernist architectural trend seems to close the gap with more mature expressions of international modernism.

Detta “villino Ida”, la casa-studio di Basile, dalla volumetria discreta e dalla calligra ca strumentazione formale astila, si distingueva rispetto alla circostante edilizia di eleganti, ma convenzionali, residenze costruite, nel quartiere di espansione settentrionale di Palermo, nella fase matura della Belle Époque. La casa Basile - con le sue bianche facciate su basamento continuo in mattoni rossi - prendeva le distanze dai compromessi imitativi, dalle metafore e manipolazioni del patrimonio storico dell’architettura e, in ne, dallo stesso slancio di formulazione di nuovi codici stilistici. A questo “apparire” singolare corrispondeva una razionale logica distributiva nel segno di un moder- no comfort non dimentico, come per tutto l’ordinamento della fabbrica, di una civiltà abitativa mediterranea. Con il villino Basile, di colpo, la nascente tendenza modernista italiana sembra accorciare le distanze con le più mature espressioni del modernismo internazionale.
