Agnizioni sallustiane in Manzoni

The anti-classical character of Manzoni's work following the double conversion - religious and artistic - has often been too emphasized, and in any case it is limited more than anything else to the ideological level, manifesting itself as a condemnation without appeal of ancient mythology and of the despotic character of Roman domination. . The situation is different on the more strictly literary side, where quotations and echoes by Greek and especially Latin authors are frequent. One of these is undoubtedly Sallust, whose writings Manzoni almost certainly had to consult at the time he was planning to write a tragedy about Spartacus. In this note some correspondences are highlighted between a fundamental chapter of De Catilinae contiuratione and different Manzoni's places, analyzing above all the ways of intertextual transposition.

Il carattere anticlassico dell’opera manzoniana successiva alla duplice conversione – religiosa e artistica – è stato spesso troppo enfatizzatato, e in ogni caso risulta limitato più che altro al piano ideologico, manifestandosi come condanna senza appello della mitologia antica e del carattere dispotico del dominio romano. Diversa è la situazione sul versante più strettamente letterario, dove frequenti sono le citazioni e i riecheggiamenti degli autori greci e soprattutto latini. Uno di questi è senza dubbio Sallustio, i cui scritti Manzoni dovette quasi certamente consultare al tempo in cui progettava di scrivere una tragedia su Spartaco. Nella presente nota si mettono in evidenza alcune corrispondenze fra un fondamentale capitolo del De Catilinae coniuratione e diversi luoghi manzoniani, analizzando soprattutto i modi della trasposizione intertestuale.
