Abstract

The design is a creative process for the production of objects , projects and services that are used to meet any need. In architecture and city planning in the design process is designed especially to meet the needs of living. Sustainable urban design is in fact a creative process for the implementation of sustainable practices. Adding up the benefits for all sectors that deal with sustainability indices , it can be argued that the reduction of the environmental impact , better use of the cultural and environmental resources and an improved quality of life for the inhabitants are the main advantages to build sustainable urban development. There are various urban problems in certain cities of southern Italy and southern Europe have delayed and hindered the implementation of the mechanisms necessary to make cities sustainable. In some cases, the delay in the understanding and implementation of the devices of modern photovoltaic, wind power, geothermal energy, etc.. as well as the delay and sometimes the non-existence of "intelligent transportation", treatment of waste, wastewater treatment etc. The earth has responded negatively to the exploitation of nature through the careless use of energy, water, soil and waste. In terms of technological design, build quality in the process of construction of buildings, services and infrastructure, is one of the determining factors of sustainable urban development. Sustainable design is developed at different levels: local and global, and can be partial, complete and confluent. At the local level institutions are involved in the development of guidelines for sustainable development, to be able to also have sustainability indicators for the management of various projects and programs of regional development. The aim of this study is to investigate the "typical" that define the building and environmental sustainability in small towns. These sites are designed as "experimental districts" in which to analyze the technological project and the benefits of its application for the enhancement and development of the built environment (Green building solutions). The study explores some urban sustainability indicators that directly affect the development of communities and settlement contexts. The project method is based on a comparative analysis of some cases of good design practice, Sicily and Greece. The comparison of the case studies, is intended for the application and testing of "sustainability indicators" and the formulation of new "sub-indicators of typical" for an enhancement of the architectural heritage unique to each context but as part of a unique historical, cultural and landscape.
