Among the new phenomena recorded by pedagogical reflections on family life, perhaps the most interesting is an actual change in the new fathers’ awareness of their commitment to their children’s education. In terms of experience, it must be recognized that the new fathers phenomenon is still statistically confined to a minority of people; however, it appears significant from a pedagogical viewpoint: in fact, not only can fathers’ greater physical and psychological presence be detected; the true novelty consists in a fresh involvement of new fathers in education. These more involved fathers no longer are the authoritarian figures who, within traditional families, represented an institution rather than actual persons; neither are they the permissive fathers who had to adapt to their children’s sometimes bitter challenges, whilst actually leaving them to fend for themselves. They have chosen to leave their latency. When embodying a good life ideal, they have learnt they must entrust it to apparently insignificant actions and communicate it indirectly: this is the fathers’ humble truth. Perhaps the myth for adequately understanding the sense of this paternity and the features of the relationship with one’s children no longer is that of Oedipus or that of Narcissus; it is the myth of Telemachus, Odysseus’ son. In this sense, the father gives his child the right to desire its own fulfillment; and the child can become its father’s rightful heir when fulfilling the father’s desire to see the child being fulfilled.

Tra i fenomeni nuovi che la riflessione pedagogica sulla vita di famiglia registra, forse il più interessante è costituito dal sensibile mutamento di coscienza dei nuovi padri nell’impegno educativo per i loro figli. Dal punto di vista esperienziale, bisogna riconoscere che il fenomeno emergente è ancora un fatto statisticamente minoritario, esso appare però pedagogicamente significativo: infatti, non è rilevabile solo una maggiore presenza fisica e psicologica dei padri, accanto alle madri e ai figli/alle figlie. La vera novità consiste in un inedito coinvolgimento dei neopadri nell’azione educativa. Questi padri più presenti non sono più i padri autoritari che, all’interno delle famiglie tradizionali, rappresentavano più un’istituzione che una persona concreta;. non sono neanche i padri permissivi, che si son dovuti adeguare alla contestazione anche aspra dei figli, lasciandoli tanto spesso soli. Essi hanno scelto di uscire dal nascondimento e dalla latenza; e quando incarnano un ideale di vita buona, hanno appreso che devono consegnarlo ad atti singolari e comunicarlo col linguaggio della testimonianza discreta – ecco la verità umile dei padri. Forse il mito per intendere adeguatamente il senso di questa paternità e lo specifico del rapporto coi figli non è più quello di Edipo né quello di Narciso; è il mito di Telemaco, il figlio di Ulisse. Dentro questo orizzonte di significato, il padre dona al figlio il diritto di desiderare la propria realizzazione; e il figlio può diventare giusto erede, quando realizza il desiderio del padre di vederlo realizzato.
