This paper investigates the effect of R&D, machinery investment, personnel training and management systems on innovation at firm-level in eight European countries. Particular attention is paid to the role of R&D in favouring the absorption of new technologies. Unexpectedly, significant evidence of positive absorption emerges only in less innovative firms.
