In a recent review published in Wilderness & Environ-mental Medicine, we highlighted the concept of thepotential risk of heat stroke for swimmers during long-distance events in warm or hot water. 1 After reviewingthe scientific literature relevant to the topic, we indicatedthe factors that may accentuate the risk in open-waterswimmers, namely high exercise intensity, specific bodycomposition, heat gain by sunlight radiation, and lowpotential for convective cooling during swimming.
