The sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) has played an important role for mountain communities in Sicily, as in other regions. However, knowledge of the species on the island is limited, partly due to a lack of specific studies. Information on the species’ varietal platform has been collected only sporadically; whilst this platform is undoubtedly more limited than in other parts of the country, it is of considerable interest. In fact, this unexploited genetic basis is in many cases the result of mass selection by farmers and should therefore be recovered and promoted, as it is likely wellsuited to climatic conditions that are extreme for the species. Its historical and cultural significance is also considerable, as in many cases it stems from introductions occurred in past centuries from other regions. Unfortunately, this heritage is in danger of disappearing, and initiatives should be launched to protect and promote it. Furthermore, considering the calls coming from the chestnutgrowing community, it is important to clarify certain aspects related to its use. This could, in fact, give impetus to the reintroduction of the species into cultivation, with positive impacts on the economy and local areas.
