Abstract
In Palermo, the patronage of Giannettino Doria (1573-1642), cardinal and archbishop, stood at the crossroads between manifestation of power, family prestige, and diplomatic mediation. Music reflected this subtle process, serving both as an element of distinction and as an instrument to enrich the urban soundscape. Doria was a careful director of these dynamics, acting on aspects that involved urban ceremonial. The introduction of new cults (Saint Rosalia), as well as the consolidation of specific devotions (the Immaculate Conception), influenced the city's sound profile, leading to the spread of practices that soon became distinctive of Palermo's musical identity. Even the reform of the convents, apparently settled on conservative positions, reveals a balanced consideration of the situation in the female institutions and how music was seen as an intrinsic element of community life. In this perspective, Doria personally interpreted the relationship between tradition and innovation, contributing to the consolidation of specific customs and having a long-term impact on the city's musical scene.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
