The essay examines the musical role of the Cappella Palatina in Palermo between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, highlighting its function in the strategies employed to legitimize monarchical power. Drawing on an in-depth analysis of a range of sources, the study begins by considering the ecclesiastical context of early modern Sicily, still shaped by the privilege of the Apostolic Legateship (legazia apostolica), which granted the island’s sovereigns direct authority over religious affairs. It then explores the musical reform initiated by Viceroy Marcantonio Colonna in 1584, shedding light on the organization and composition of the musical establishment, the geographical origins of its musicians, and the succession of chapel masters, with particular attention to the interaction between local and non-local musicians. The essay also investigates the relationship between music and ceremonial practices, emphasizing the contribution of the Cappella Palatina to the representation and assertion of Spanish monarchical power. Finally, it examines the gradual transition from Spanish to Savoyard and subsequently Bourbon rule, considering its repercussions for the Royal Chapel and Palermo’s musical landscape throughout the eighteenth century.
