In Seneca’s Phaedra, the relationship between Theseus and Hippolytus, made up of missed dialogues and posthumous acknowledgements, has a special place. The paper deals with this singular relationship in the light of both the literary tradition (especially Euripides) and the Latin mentality, in which – as is well known – the father-son relationship is at the centre of the mos.

Abstract

In Seneca’s Phaedra, the relationship between Theseus and Hippolytus, made up of missed dialogues and posthumous acknowledgements, has a special place. The paper deals with this singular relationship in the light of both the literary tradition (especially Euripides) and the Latin mentality, in which – as is well known – the father-son relationship is at the centre of the mos.
