This essay examines the representation of Blessed Columba of Rieti in Niccolò Alessi’s Latin poem Columbedidos, a hexameter versification of the earliest prose Legenda devoted to the Rieti-born blessed, founder of the Perugian monastery known as “delle Colombe”. Particular attention is devoted to the representation of the struggle between Blessed Columba and the dragon, a figuration of Satan. By drawing a comparison between the prose texts, on the one hand, and the Latin poem, on the other, the essay brings to light the literary stereotypes, ideological connections, and forms of self-awareness that underpin the text.

Abstract
