Starting from the complete version of Euripides by the Renaissance interpreter Dorotheus Camillus / Rudolf Ambühl (of the eighteen Dramata of the Euripidean Corpus known at his time), three translators (Camillus himself, Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam and Kaspar Stiblin) are compared on the first stasimon of Euripides’s Iphigenia at Aulis, observing different translation styles and their different approaches to the textus receptus of their time, here sound and comprehensible, there corrupt. The most interesting of the three is Stiblin, whose version here and there underlies a different, more modern text (which he does not publish), which in some ways anticipates conjectures accepted today.
