This study aims to examine the dual role of music: firstly, as an instrument of power, used to promote the objectives of authoritarian regimes in 20th century Iran; secondly, as a means of popular protest against dictatorship. The research highlights a profound contradiction between the restrictions imposed on citizens’ musical activities and the regimes’ inability to renounce its use, thus offering a reflection on the role of music in the relationship between Authority and Freedom and its ability to reflect its evolution.
