Curare il corpo e salvare l'anima. "Investimenti" caritativi nella Sicilia tardomedievale

This essay examines various forms of the "culture of care," bound together by the quintessential healthcare institution —the hospital— and by the recipients of such care: the poor, orphans, and the sick. The practice of "care," in the multiplicity of meanings attributed to the term, is analyzed through testamentary bequests, acts of charity implemented within hospitals, and the material and spiritual assistance provided by confraternities. Hospitals, testaments, and confraternities are thus placed in relation to the care of both body and soul—two closely interconnected dimensions of care.

Il saggio prende in considerazione diverse forme di “cultura della cura” accomunate dal luogo di cura per eccellenza, l’ospedale, e dal destinatario della cura, poveri, orfani e malati. L’esercizio della “cura”, nella pluralità di significati attribuibili al termine, viene analizzato attraverso legati testamentari, forme di carità messe in atto negli ospedali e assistenza materiale e spirituale offerta dalle confraternite. Ospedali, testamenti, confraternite messi, dunque, in relazione alla cura, non solo del corpo, ma anche dell’anima, cure strettamente interconnesse tra loro.
