This article examines the role that equestrian militiae could play in promoting an equestrian career, with particular attention to the attainment of procuratorial posts. Drawing on a comprehensive analysis of the procurators of the western provinces, as documented in the RIDERS project database, it argues that the territorial knowledge acquired by officers during their militiae may have constituted a crucial factor in the selection of procurators for provincial appointments.

Abstract

This article examines the role that equestrian militiae could play in promoting an equestrian career, with particular attention to the attainment of procuratorial posts.
