Law uses language and it is a language for doing things. The contribution traces the different lines in which the relationship between law and language has been studied, both considering language as the tool of law, and considering language as part of law. The first aspect is typical of the codification phenomenon, The second aspect emerges in the context of the linguistic turn, where the point of view of participants is central.
